IRL ‘saddened and concerned’ at RFL chair Johnson’s resignation

RFL chair Simon Johnson announced his resignation on Tuesday and will be leaving his role following Wednesday's spring council meeting; the former ITV, Premier League and FA executive had been in the post for nearly six years; Johnson also served as deputy chair of global governing body International Rugby League, which issued statement expressing "sadness and concern" at his resignation

Simon Johnson’s resignation as Rugby Football League (RFL) chair has made waves with the sport’s global governing body as well.

Johnson is set to leave after nearly six years in the role following the RFL’s spring council meeting on Wednesday, amid reports numerous clubs were plotting to oust him over a desire for change at the top of the sport in the UK.

The news caused International Rugby League (IRL), of which Johnson was also deputy chair, to release a statement which stated it was “saddened and concerned” by the former ITV, Premier League and Football Association director’s departure.

“Simon has been a wonderful contributor to the rebuilding of International Rugby League as part of the new board who inherited an organisation that suffered a telling period of selfish amateur administration, lack of vision and strategy and poor governance,” IRL chairman Troy Grant said.

“Simon has been instrumental in building the strong relationship between the Australian Rugby League Commission and Rugby Football League fostering a close personal and working relationship with ARLC chairman Peter V’landys.

“Simon is deeply admired and respected by his fellow IRL board directors, and my friend will be greatly missed.”

The announcement of Johnson’s resignation came four days after director Sandy Lindsay confirmed she was stepping down.

Rugby League Commercial chair Frank Slevin, and independent directors Anna Bayley-Chanduvi and Jonathan Murphy have recently departed, too.

Other senior members of the RFL to depart in the past few months include director of operations and legal Robert Hicks, and safeguarding manager Kerry Simmons.

Both had been suspended since the end of September pending an investigation.

Johnson’s successor will be announced following a formal review.

Former RFL chief executive and part-owner of Bradford Bulls Nigel Wood has been mooted as a likely replacement.

The outgoing chair issued a defiant defence of his record as RFL chair, pointing to the measures taken to improve player welfare and safety, investment in women’s and girls rugby league, and the growth of the wheelchair game during his tenure.

“I am proud of all that we have achieved in my six years as chair,” Johnson said.

“It has always been my aim to lead an inclusive sport with integrity, honesty, authenticity and openness. My interest has always been to put Rugby League first.

“There is a need to discuss how change can be made, without exposing the sport to undue risk, and I hope that by stepping down I can help those discussions to take place constructively.”
