Rugby League Commercial is looking for an “independent, recognised, credible and strategic leader” to join as its first executive chair.
According to the job ad, the successful candidate “will have the chance to shape the sport of Rugby League for short-term and longer-term commercial growth and elevate the sport to new heights”. This is a full-time role based in Manchester.
The advertisement cames at an interesting time in the halls of power at RL Commercial and the RFL. RL Commercial chair Frank Slevin is stepping down, while two independent directors have been replaced by Hull KR’s Paul Lakin and St Helens’ Eammon McManus.
RFL chairman Simon Johnson is currently on the RL Commercial board, but the Super League clubs are plotting to have him removed. Rob Hicks, the RFL’s Director of Operations and Legal, is also on the RL Commercial board but is currently suspended following an investigation.
The ad states: “With the upcoming departure of the current Chair in July, we are seeking another independent, recognised, credible and strategic leader to join the Board as the first Executive Chair of RL Commercial.
“In consultation with the outgoing Chair, the Board, and key stakeholders, RL Commercial has determined that it is more appropriate, currently, for the business to have a full-time rather than non-executive Chair, allowing the Chair to commit the time necessary to lead the organization into a key phase in its development.
“The Executive Chair will devise and implement, in conjunction with the MD and executive leadership team, a strategic plan that enables RL Commercial to align all elements of the sport of Rugby League to short-term and long-term commercial growth.
“They will demonstrate the gravitas and credibility to deliver a compelling commercial vision which brings all stakeholders into alignment with commercial growth in the interests of the whole sport and will be a problem-solver who can enable RL Commercial to fulfill the commercial potential of the sport of Rugby League in the years ahead.
“An exceptional, respected leader with the independence, skills, and credibility to support and challenge the Board and stakeholders. The ideal candidate will demonstrate strategic vision, leadership, problem-solving and negotiating credibility to lead the Board’s strategic direction”.
“They will be a natural collaborator, capable of building effective relationships within and outside Rugby League. With high levels of political sensitivity, diplomacy, and judgment, the Executive Chair will offer excellent ambassadorial and networking skills.”
The deadline for applicants is March 7.
