WARRINGTON Wolves head coach Tony Smith has stressed his club’s willingness to be a driving force in the development of the World Club Series. The Wolves lost to St George Illawarra in 2015 in the inaugural series, but they gave the competition a much needed shot in the arm by ending an eight-match losing streak for Super League clubs against their NRL counterparts with a 27-18 win over Brisbane on Saturday.
“We realise it’s big,” said Smith. “We knew that we were responsible for some of the credibility over here. They’ve shown that this is a good part of the world to play rugby league and we can play some pretty decent stuff. We want Super League to get stronger, but we also want to develop this concept as well.”
Smith has in the past been enthusiastic about travelling to Australia to compete, and this was reaffirmed when he said: “We’re grateful Brisbane have come over here and given us the opportunity and given our supporters the chance to see an iconic club play rugby league, and at the same time promote our sport worldwide. It would be great to go over and play the Broncos at their place.”
