England coach Shaun Wane has hailed his team’s defence and detail after a one-sided third Test victory over Tonga.
England whitewashed Tonga after notching a convincing 26-4 win in Leeds.
“I thought the first two Tests were different conditions, it was a bit firmer, [so] we played a bit more today,” Wane said.
“We did good today. We stuck to our task well. They can play, they’re athletic and they’re big. But our desire to defend and our detail in everything we did was absolutely outstanding.
“I’m unbelievably proud of what we’ve done.
“The players were ready and fresh in all three Tests and they got the job done.
“I so badly wanted to win this game. I was obsessive.
“But we definitely haven’t atoned for the World Cup semi-final loss. I’m just happy we won this series.
Wane praised the performances of his players and the influence of his assistants Andy Last and Lee Briers.
“We’ve had a great time,” he said.
“We’ve got a really, really good team spirit. It’s very much like a club team. There’s no club cliques.
“That’s been the most satisfying thing for me. That’s why we’ve had success today.”
Wane said he is hoping there is a mid-season Test next year before Samoa touring the UK.
“That’ll be a massive three games next year,” he said.
