Super League, RFL to investigate ‘appalling’ Catalans crowd trouble

Super League and the RFL have released a joint statement saying an investigation will be launched following disgraceful scenes of fighting in the crowd during the Catalans’ defeat of Warrington in Perpignan.

The ending of the Dragons’ 30-10 victory over the Wolves was marred by a series of on-field brawls and then fighting in the stands between opposing fans.

Catalans pair Sam Tomkins and Michael McIllorum were both red carded after the whistle for their role in the punch-up on the pitch, while Warrington winger Jake Mamo was yellow carded.

The Super League and RFL joint statement is as follows: “We were appalled to see the pictures from Perpignan, and an investigation will be launched.

“The scenes are alien to Super League and have no place in our game. We will be taking firm action to make it clear this behaviour is totally unacceptable.”

In a bad-tempered match both teams were reduced to 12 men following a brawl in the 15th minute, with Warrington prop Chris Hill and Catalans hooker McIlorum being sent to the sin bin for a high tackle and McLlorum rushing in after it.

Following the final whistle, a fight between both sides inflamed the crowd, with both sets of fans trying to climb over the barriers to get to each other and chairs and bottles thrown.

Catalans Dragons Chairman Bernard Guasch said in a statement: “We are shocked at what happened at the end of the today’s game. The Gilbert Brutus Stadium has always been a festive place and we are saddened with the scenes we saw tonight.

“We have never witnessed such  incidents in 13 years in the Super League. We are now waiting for the CCTV footages before making any decision.”

Warrington said in a statement: “Warrington Wolves are deeply disappointed with the incidents at the conclusion of tonight’s fixture at the Stade Gilbert Brutus.

“The club is working in conjunction with Catalans Dragons and Super League to gather further information, and determine the appropriate action required.

“The club does not condone this behaviour and strongly believes that scenes like this have no place in our sport. We sincerely believe that this behaviour does not reflect the vast majority of our loyal and supportive fanbase following the team in France this weekend.”
