St Helens 12 Warrington Wolves 14: Sneyd makes mark after only two training sessions

New Warrington Wolves signing Marc Sneyd claimed player of the match honours on his debut as they won 14-12 away to St Helens in Round 5 of the Betfred Super League on Friday; Sneyd kicked two goals and provided the assist for half-back partner George Williams' try; Matty Ashton got the other try for the Wolves, who moved level on points with Saints following the win

George Williams hailed Marc Sneyd’s rapid impact at Warrington Wolves after his England half-back partner took player of the match on his debut in the 14-12 win over St Helens.

Sneyd had little time to acclimatise himself ahead of his Wolves debut away to one of their biggest rivals after signing from Salford Red Devils last week, but landed three goals and assisted a try from Williams with a deft kick in Friday’s Betfred Super League clash at Totally Wicked Stadium.

The duo played together twice for England at the last Rugby League World Cup and the national team captain is excited to have the 34-year-old alongside him for his club.

“It’s brilliant,” Williams told BBC 5 Live Sports Extra. “I think you’ve seen what he brings to the team.

“We were trapped in our own half and he just kicks us out of trouble, and that combination will just build and build.

“We’ve only had two sessions together and he put me over for a try, so I’m more than happy with that.”

Matty Ashton punished an error from Jack Welsby to race down the left touchline and finish for the Wolves’ other score, while tries from Morgan Knowles and debutant Dayon Sambou plus two goals from Mark Percival accounted for St Helens’ points.

Warrington had to do it the hard way against Saints though, with the hosts edging the possession percentage 53-47, and out-gaining the Wolves in both run metres (1,661-1,321) and post-contact metres (560-507).

Sneyd, however, relished coming out on top in a tight match with his new team-mates which moved them level on points with Saints, and expects his and Williams’ partnership to flourish once they have spent more time working together.

“It’s one of those where it’s always going to take time to get used to a new system, especially the position I’m playing in, but we’ve crammed a lot in to a couple of days,” Sneyd told BBC 5 Live Sports Extra.

“Hopefully the more time we get to spend on the field, the better we will be.

“It was a tough one – it was exactly what you expect when you come to St Helens.

“I do prefer those kind of games where you come out on the right side of them to your 50-0ers, so I’m happy.”
