John Cartwright has high hopes for Aidan Sezer after the Hull FC captain helped his new side get the 2025 Betfred Super League season off to a winning start.
Former Huddersfield Giants player Sezer has returned the European competition after a season with NRL strugglers Wests Tigers and was named player of the match as the Black and Whites stunned Catalans Dragons on Friday with a 24-4 victory in Perpignan.
That can as no surprise to new Hull FC head coach Cartwright, who expects to see more of the same from the 33-year-old as the campaign progresses.
“I knew what we were getting when we got him,” Cartwright told Sky Sports.
“He’s a little competitor, he’s got a great kicking game and he never gives up.
“I was excited when I spoke to him about coming over here and he was very enthusiastic about it. “He’ll play like that every week.”
Two tries from Sezer’s fellow newcomer Cade Cust, one apiece from Jordan Lane and Tom Briscoe, plus three conversions and a penalty from Sezer, sent last year’s 11th-place finishers on their way to a convincing win over the Dragons.
Although they gained more metres than the hosts, Hull FC still had to do be on their mettle in defence as Catalans edged the possession 54 percent to 46 percent.
“We knew they had a big forward pack and we’d have to move them around and work really hard in defence,” Sezer told Sky Sports.
“We did that, we came up with the chocolates, and it’s a good way to start our year.
“A lot has been made about the past and what happened last year, but it’s a new group and a fresh start, and it’s good to send our fans away with a smile on their faces and put in a good performance.”
