Senior official departs RFL

Exclusive: The RFL’s safeguarding manager, Kerry Simmons, has left the organisation.

Simmons was suspended from the RFL, along with her superior Robert Hicks, in late September 2024 pending an investigation. At the time the RFL said: “Two members of staff were suspended last week, pending investigation into disclosures we have received under our Public Interest Disclosure Policy.”

Now, Simmons has departed the governing body.

Sources have told rugbyleaguehub.com Long Reads that she has had her employment terminated, but the RFL has denied this is the case

An RFL spokesperson said Simmons had resigned from her position. The spokesperson told rugbyleaguehub.com Long Reads that there is no update on the investigation into Hicks which began five months ago.

Simmons served as the governing body’s safeguarding manager and was responsible for promoting safeguarding, implementing changes and ensuring safeguarding practices are followed and stuck to at all levels of the sport.

She joined the RFL in 2020. Before that she was involved in the community game and had served as club welfare officer at Orrell St James.

Hicks is responsible for the management of the RFL’s safeguarding team. He also sits on the organisation’s board with the title of Director of Operations & Legal.
