Salford Confirm Interest in Gareth Widdop

SALFORD Red Devils have confirmed their interest in snatching England five-eighth Gareth Widdop away from St George Illawarra.

Widdop, 28, is off contract with the joint venture this year and has been linked with a number of clubs in his homeland with Leeds also a touted contender for his signature.

“He would interest us,” Salford CEO Ian Blease told League Express magazine. “We want to be a big time club and he’s a big time player.

“I’ve spoken to the coach about him already. Whether we could get him remains to be seen. Our interest is not detriment to our current players because we’re very happy with what we’ve got as well.

“But it’s always nice to look and see what’s out there as well.”

St George Illawarra football manager Ian Millward has told the Press Association the club wants to hold onto skipper Widdop, the scorer of a good individual try on Sunday night against Parramatta.

“At this point in time, we’ve made him an offer to stay,” Millward was quoted as saying. “We’re only in very early discussions.”
