RLPA’s Carvell: Second match of Easter weekend “always really, really poor”

RUGBY League Players Association British boss Garreth Carvell has weighed in on the sensitive topic of the double Super League round at Easter, saying the second match is “always” a poor spectacle.

Speaking on the Talk Sport rugby league show tonight, Carvell says he’ll get the position of members on playing two games during the holiday long weekend before making representations to clubs and the RFL.
But he said: “We’re never going to see eye to eye on everything. Players will want one thing, RFL and owners will want another thing.
“Negotiations will be ongoing. We’ll win some, we’ll lose some.
“I’m sure a lot of people listening will totally agree with me – the second game on the Easter weekend is always really, really poor.
“I think a lot of the time, a few players get injured and that club, their season can hinge on that. That’s not right. It’s not fair. I think the season probably should be shorter as well.”
Carvell stressed that the Rugby Football League did recognise the RLPA, as part of the GMB union. But recognition from clubs was something he was still working on.
“We’re signing all the players up, getting all the memberships in and then what we’ll do, we’ll get support from the RFL to get this recognition within the clubs,” he said.
“That’s sort of the first step, really, of going ahead with this union and getting something seriously done.”
