CENTRE Kallum Watkins – the man who was one ankle-tap away from being a World Cup hero – has been named captain of Super League champions Leeds for this year.
The announcement was made at a local school on Facebook Live, with two children chosen to open an envelope containing his name. Watkins, 26, has over 200 appearances for the Rhinos since making his debut in 2007.
“This is a huge honour to me being named captain but it’s great being here with you guys as well,” Watkins said to a classroom full of noisy children.
“Just a big thank you.”
In December a Josh Dugan ankle-tap on Watkins prevented what looked like a certain England try in the World Cup final, the Aussies hanging on to win 6-0. Watkins is a product of the Folly Lane Pendlebury amateur club.
In other news, the season of Hull KR forward Danny Addy is over.
Addy suffered a cruciate ligament knee injury in Sunday’s derby win over Hull. Scans confirmed the bad news for the Scotland forward on Monday.
Addy covers more positions than anyone else in coach Tim Sheens’ squad.
