Huddersfield coach Ian Watson says Jake Connor lost sight of the scoreline when he kicked into touch late in the loss to Leeds.
The Giants went down 18-17 at Headingley, but a turning point came with less than five minutes left when Connor decided to kick for touch close to the Rhinos’ line, instead of attempting a drop goal.
“He just lost track of it,” Connor explained.
“He looked over his shoulder and he’s been caught in the moment. We could have been smarter in how we manage the game there.
“He said he got it wrong. It happens in games.”
Huddersfield raced to a 12-0 lead and led 13-4 at half-time. But they failed to push on in the second half, with Leeds finishing strongly to grab the win.
“It was similar to last year where we lost it at the death,” Watson admitted.
“Leeds started to find a way out of their end a little too easily and got the spoils.
“We started to chase the game. We needed to be patient and put the pressure on them, but we didn’t do that.
“We’ve lost the game there because people started to play individually instead of as a team.
“But there’s good signs. There’s some tough lessons that some of the young players will learn.”
Watson revealed in the post match press-conference that Oliver Russell tore his hamstring in training and could be out for some time.
