AUSTRALIA star Greg Inglis has been ruled out for six months as North Queensland scored an astonishing extra time victory on day three of the 2017 NRL season.
Inglis played on with what turned out to be a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament in Friday night’s South Sydney loss to Wests Tigers. In announcing the diagnoses, the Rabbitohs said the injury was not exacerbated by his decision to stay on the field.
Even that seismic news was eclipsed by an amazing round one contest at 1300SMILES Stadium, where North Queensland captain Johnathan Thurston missed a late penalty goal that would have taken him past the 2000 career points barrier and also assured his side of victory against Canberra.
He then missed another chance to hit the mark with a deflected field goal near the end of regulation time. Another shot five minutes into overtime hit the crossbar and landed freakishly in the in-goal area.
There, Thurston lost the race for it again – to team-mate Gavin Cooper. The Cowboys won a controversial contest, in which Raider BJ Leilua appeared to punch second rower Cooper, but Thurston stayed on 1999 points.
Earlier, St George Illawarra shocked 2017 heavyweights Penrith 42-10 at Kogarah Oval while Latrell Mitchell posted his first career hat-trick as Sydney Roosters eased past Gold Coast 32-18 in the final match of the evening.
