Hood hails humilty as key to Powell’s Wakefield revival

Wakefield Trinity recorded their third win since their return to the Betfred Super League with an impressive win over Leigh Leopards last Friday; Daryl Powell's side face the same opponent for a place in the Betfred Challenge Cup semi-finals this Friday; hooker Liam Hood sees a lack of egos as key to Wakefield's strong showings under Powell

LIAM Hood believes a lack of egos at Wakefield Trinity is behind the success Daryl Powell has enjoyed since taking charge of his hometown club.

Trinity have made a solid start to life back in the Betfred Super League with three wins from their opening six games, including a 40-14 win away to Leigh Leopards last Friday and a 30-16 win over Powell’s previous employer Warrington Wolves.

It follows Wakefield completing a Betfred Championship and AB Sundecks 1895 Cup double in 2024 in Powell’s first season at the helm, and hooker Hood has his own theory as to why the former Great Britain international is thriving again after a difficult 18 months ag the helm of Warrington.

“Sometimes when you go to some of these ‘bigger’ clubs, I don’t know if there are a few more egos or things like that,” Hood told The Bench podcast.

“We don’t have any of that here, we’re just all one group who are willing to work together.

“Powelly puts a lot of hard work in and we’re trying to repay him for that hard work, and see what we can do for putting the faith into us, and repay that faith.”

Wakefield sit eighth in the Super League table after six rounds, one point off the play-off places, and are aiming to reach the Betfred Challenge Cup semi-finals for the first time in nine years when they host 2023 winners Leigh on Friday night.

Although Hood admits Powell has pushed the team since their elevation back to rugby league’s top flight, he has not seen much of a change in the boss from his first year in charge.

“I think he’s been pretty similar,” Hood said.

“I think he knows he needs to push us a little bit harder because the competition coming up to Super League from the Championship is totally different.

“He’s quite chilled and he’s really funny. He comes across on TV as a quite a serious person, but he’s pretty funny.”
