Wakefield prop Keegan Hirst says Trinity can still grab a Super League finals spot despite a horror run of form.
Wakefield have lost eight of their past nine games in a row and face derby rivals Castleford tonight at the Mobile Rocket Stadium.
Last weekend they were smashed 44-10 by Catalans Dragons in France.
Trinity sit only four points from the bottom of the table, leading to fears of relegation, but Hirst is confident they can turn it around.
“I think relegation got mentioned when we lost to Salford the other week, but then we beat Huddersfield and we were looking up,” the forward said.
“Then you suffer a loss and you start looking over your shoulder. I think we’re four points off the bottom and four points off fourth sport, so it is wide open.
“We’ve just got to keep looking up. If we can string a few results together I’ve got no doubt we can get into the top five.”
Castleford have only won one of their past four matches and have slipped out of the top five.
But the Tigers have an impressive record against Wakefield and Hirst knows they will be dangerous.
He said: “We put in a poor performance against Catalans and Cas didn’t play the best against Leeds, so both teams will be looking for a response.
“And it being a local derby we’ve not been particularly good against Castleford for the past few years. We’ve struggled with form, but so have they.
“People say form goes out the window so I think we’re both hoping it does because neither of us have been playing particularly well.
“It’s a massive game that both teams need to win.”
