ENGLAND captain George Williams says he would welcome Australasian involvement in what is now Super League, admitting: “if we’re being honest, I think the NRL do it a lot better than we do over here”.

In recent weeks speculation has amped up that the Australian Rugby League Commission is going to invest money and resources into running Europe’s elite competition – not least because chairman Peter V’landys has said so.

Williams’ club, Warrington, voted against the return of Nigel Wood as RFL chairman along with the Wolves’ opponents in Las Vegas, Wigan – leading tp speculation that they are the teams who would be at the forefront of ‘NRL Europe’.

Asked if he felt the NRL becoming involved in the British game would be a positive, Williams told rugbyleague.com Long Reads: “I think so, I think so.

“If we’re being honest, I think the NRL do it a lot better than we do over here.

“I think a lot of it obviously comes down to the TV deals and the funding but there’s still a lot of principles that they use and they market the game really well. Hopefully we can follow suit a little bit.

“We seem to always copy them with the rules and what’s going on so if they can come over and help us and grow the game over here then, yeah, that would be brilliant.”

Asked for specific thoughts on the NRL running the elite European competition, Williams answered: “Whatever it may be, most importantly we just need to be able to grow the game.

“It’s thriving in Australia. They’re obviously doing a great job at marketing … the product’s brilliant.

“It’s the same thing if you’re watching the Super League: most people enjoy it.

“So let’s get it out there and get some new faces.”
