Elstone: There’s no anti-Toronto agenda

Super League CEO Robert Elstone has insisted there is no agenda against the Toronto Wolfpack, but admits the Canadian club may not be allowed into the top flight even if they win promotion – unless they meet certain standards.

Toronto are currently in dialogue with Super League and the RFL about meeting the requirements for promotion.

Wolfpack CEO Bob Hunter is in the UK at the moment meeting with officials.

It is believe there are concerns over the suitability over Lamport Stadium to host matches, as well unpaid bills and off-field issues that have impacted Toronto.

“They have to meet minimum standards,” Elstone told a media briefing today.

“We are seeking a number of assurances – if we get those and Toronto win they are in.

“If we get those, and Toronto are promoted, then they won’t be taking  any distribution and the pot will be shared between 11 clubs.

“We  are still in dialogue with the RFL and it is important that we get those assurances well before promotion is determined on the pitch.

“The dialogue started in July. What we cannot afford to do is make that decision once promotion is decided.

“Toulouse will be asked to comply with minimum standards but there are a number of different concerns and issues relating to Toronto.

“There are  some things we’re seeking answers on that we don’t feel we need to with Toulouse. That’s not to say there’s an anti-Toronto agenda, but the  circumstances are different.”
