Davies loving life at Hull KR after milestone try

Tom Davies scored his first Betfred Super League try for Hull KR as they battled past Wakefield Trinity 14-12 in the Round 2 opener at DIY Kitchens Stadium on Thursday; it marked the 100th career try for the winger, who joined the Robins from Catalans Dragons in the off-season; Davies hailed Hull KR's togetherness after a tight win which saw his old Catalans team-mate Michael McIlorum sin-binned late on

Tom Davies is loving life with Hull KR after grabbing a milestone try in Thursday’s 14-12 victory away to Wakefield Trinity.

The former Catalans Dragons winger, who returned to England over the winter after five seasons in the south of France, set the Robins on their way to a hard-fought win at the DIY Kitchens stadium with his first Betfred Super League score for the club on seven minutes.

It also marked the 100th career try for Davies and the Wigan native could not be any happier with his start to his time in East Hull, both on and off the pitch.

“It’s always good to get over for one,” Davies, who was chosen as player of the match, told Sky Sports.

“I’m enjoying it. It’s a rugby-mad town and I’m glad the fans and everyone has welcomed me.

“I’m enjoying coming back and settling back into English life.”

The 28-year-old’s 63 tries in 109 appearances for Catalans helped establish him as one of Super League’s most prolific scorers and saw him capped by England.

Davies proved a menace down the flank for Wakefield on Thursday as well, making 183 metres with an average gain of eight yards per carry, along with busting one tackle and making two clean breaks.

It was a fractious affair at times though and last year’s Grand Final runners-up had to do it the hard way.

First, reigning Man of Steel Mikey Lewis was injured in the act of scoring their second try, and then the visitors went down to 12 players in the closing stages following Davies’ former Dragons team-mate Michael McIlorum being sin-binned.

It followed a 19-18 golden-point win over Castleford Tigers at home in Round 1 and Davies hailed the fighting spirit of his new team-mates.

“We’ve been in two tough games now, but that’s what pre-season is all about and preparing for them,” Davies said.

“At the start of the season, everyone is physically fit and raring to go, so I think we’ve prepared for that and, at the end of the day, we got the result in both – and that’s all that matters.

“It’s that connection we have as a team, that willingness to work hard for each other.

“We’ve got a really tight-knit group, no one wants to let anyone down and that comes in massive in tight games like that.”
