ARL Executive chairman Ken Arthurson has predicted a 16-team, two division format for the Sydney competition within the next two years.
Arthurson, speaking at Illawarra’s Stegbar Medal presentation last Friday night, spoke out strongly against the sacking of clubs from the competition.
“I think before long you’ll see two divisions of eight teams,” said Arthurson.
“There should be no reduction in the teams. Suggestions that there are not enough first graders to go around is absolute bull in my opinion. It’s just nonsense.”
Arthurson, who presented second-rower Michael Carberry with the award, made a point of expressing disappointment at Brisbane’s failure to field a team in next year’s Winfield Cup “But I think you’ll see them in for the 1988 season, and I also think you’ll see Newcastle.
“There will almost certainly be 13 teams next year.”
Arthurson reassured the Steelers of their future after recent speculation that they were among those likely to be cut for 1987.
The 13 Sydney teams plus Newcastle and Brisbane makes 15. So the question now is who will be the last addition to balance the numbers?
Carberry took the Steelers’ award in a close contest from Kangaroo train-on squad member Alan McIndoe, NSW rep Brian Hetherington and halfback Greg Mackey.
“Michael represents what this club is all about. He’s had setbacks but has refused to give in,” said coach Brian Smith.
Aside from Carberry, other award winners were: Craig Keen (Rick Possetti Memorial Award), Chris Macklin-Shaw (Rookie of the Year), Sean O’Connor (reserve grade Player of the Year) and Dean Hansen (under-23s).
