WAKEFIELD chairman Michael Carter admits a competition structure for 2019 is unlikely to be finalised before this year’s Super League kicks off.
Speaking in League Weekly this morning, Carter predicted a the clubs’ own deadline was likely to be missed.
“There’s been a lot of meetings over the last two months or so, we’ve probably been discussing 2018 and 2019 for about a year and not got to any consensus,” Carter is quoted as saying.
“So to expect something in the next couple of weeks? It’s not on my horizon, put it that way.
“I can’t see it (before the start of the season). Never say never in rugby league but I find it difficult.”
Carter confirmed rumours that consideration had been given to expanding Super League to 14 teams but cast doubt over whether Toronto – if they are added – would get an even share of TV money.
“There are some trains of thought that would like to go to 14 teams, which is well documented – if there’s 14 teams we feel are capable of Super League standards,” he said.
“Obviously there is Leigh – and then you start to think whether Toronto fit into that. Are they taking a slice of the cake or not?”
Carter lent weight to the idea that the new Super League faction would be more heartlands-based in a separate story in the this morning’s League Weekly.
“I feel we have spread our resources too thinly,” he said. “I want us to get our core game really strong first and then it gives us the chance to spread out a little bit
“I think we’ve tried to spread all across the country when we’re not strong enough.
“There are areas in the heartlands, particularly in the community game, where we can get a much better return on our investment.”
