CHARLIE ‘SAUS’ HAZELTON – Illawarra’s first international – has died at the age of 68.
The 1937-38 Kangaroo passed away on October 20 in Wollongong.
Playing with the Port Kembla club, the winger was selected in the sixth Kangaroos and became the first of
Illawarra’s 22 Australian representatives.
He fought in the Middle East, New Guinea and Borneo during World War Two before returning to play for St George in 1945.
Hazelton headed back to Port Kembla the following year, when the club went through the Illawarra premiership undefeated and won the Country Rugby League’s Clayton Cup.
The speedy wingman also was a member of the first Illawarra team to play an international match in 1946.
Hazelton helped South Coast Division to a 15-12 win against the all-conquering British Lions.
Reverend Reg Hanlon spoke warmly at the funeral service saying that “Charlie Hazelton’s contribution to Rugby League will never be forgotten”.
