Promising rugby league player shot and killed

A PROMISING young rugby league player has been shot dead during an alleged home invasion in Atlanta.
Corey Patton Jnr was a winger or back rower with the Atlanta Rhinos in the USARL southern conference who had also guested with Bombala Blue Heelers in the New South Wales Country league.
Officers with Milton Police Department told Fox 5 news they received an emergency call at 8.40pm local time on Saturday from a resident complaining an attempted robbery was in progress.
“Before police got to the scene, officers say the suspect forcibly entered the home through its locked front door and confronted the homeowner,” the TV station reported on its website.
“During the confrontation, police say the homeowner fired a handgun multiple times, hitting the intruder in the torso.
“Medics treated the suspect, identified as 23-year-old Corey Patton II from Charlotte, North Carolina, at the scene before he was transported to a nearby hospital. Patton was pronounced dead at the hospital.”
The home owner has not been named and the police would not say whether he or she would be charged. There is no information on what prompted Patton to visit the property in question.
Patton’s Facebook page was full of friends, family and team-mates paying tribute to a man who “made this world a brighter place, and you knew how to make people feel welcomed within minutes of meeting them”.
The Atlanta Rhinos announced Patton’s death by saying: “It is with an extremely heavy heart we share this news Monday morning that we have lost a true teammate, friend and brother from our Rhinos ranks. Corey Patton Jr. passed away early Sunday morning and he will be greatly missed. Another life gone too early.
“He was instrumental in bring the Championship home to Atlanta in 2017 and had a stellar season last year down under with the Bombala Blue Heelers
“Please keep your thoughts with his family as they try to process this tragedy. Much Love Corey from your Rhinos family!”
